Xero Payment Links: How Businesses Can Get Invoices Paid Faster

An unpaid Xero invoice usually means a wait, a reminder, or both. With SSV SmartPay connected to Xero, every invoice you send automatically triggers a separate SSV SmartPay email with a Pay by Bank link and QR code, so the client pays straight from their banking app and the invoice reconciles itself.

SSV SmartPay now connects directly to Xero, and every invoice you send triggers a separate SSV SmartPay email with a Pay by Bank link and QR code, so customers can pay instantly from their banking app. When they do, the payment is matched to the invoice using Xero’s own automatic reconciliation, so there is no manual matching, no card machine, and no chasing.

Why Unpaid Invoices Are Still a Problem

Many small businesses already use Xero to manage their invoices. However, friction can arise once an invoice is sent: a customer may intend to pay immediately but put it off because a manual bank transfer requires them to open their banking app and enter the sort code, account number and payment reference.

Every one of those extra steps is a chance for the invoice to slip down the inbox and quietly become “the one I’ll deal with later.” For the business waiting on it, later is exactly the problem.

The fix is not a sterner reminder email. It is removing the steps between “I want to pay this” and the money actually moving. That is what a payment link built into the invoice itself does.

How the SSV SmartPay Xero Integration Works

The integration connects your existing Xero account to SSV SmartPay in a few steps, and it is designed to be set up once and then run quietly in the background from then on.

1

Connect Xero from your SSV SmartPay dashboard

From the Integrations page, choose Xero and select Connect Xero. You are taken to Xero to log in and authorise SSV SmartPay to access your invoices, contacts, and payments, the same way any trusted Xero app connects.

2

Choose how payment links are delivered

Two settings control the experience: “Attach QR on invoice” includes a scannable payment QR code in the SSV SmartPay payment email sent for new Xero invoices, and “Enable payment link SMS” additionally texts the payment link to the customer’s contact number on file, if you switch it on.

3

Carry on invoicing in Xero as normal

Once connected, you do not need to change how you create invoices. Raise the invoice in Xero and send it as usual, and SSV SmartPay sends a separate email straight after, carrying the payment link and QR code, and a text too if you have SMS turned on.

Nothing about how you use Xero day to day needs to change. The integration sits underneath your existing workflow rather than replacing it.

Watch it in action: connecting Xero, sending an invoice, and the payment link your customer receives.

“Connect once, and every invoice after that quietly triggers its own instant way to pay. No extra step for you, no extra step for your client.”

What the Customer Actually Sees

This is the part that matters most, because it is what decides whether the invoice gets paid today or next week.

When an invoice is sent, the client receives a dedicated email from SSV SmartPay alongside the usual Xero invoice, addressed to them by name, showing the invoice number, the amount, and the due date, with two clear ways to pay:

Pay Online

A direct link in the email. One tap opens a secure payment page with the amount already set, ready to choose a bank and approve.

Scan & Pay

A QR code sits right in the email. Scan it with a banking app, and the same payment page opens on the phone.

Either way, the client picks their bank and approves the payment inside their own banking app. There is no SSV SmartPay account to create, no card details to type, and no separate login to remember. The whole thing takes about as long as reading the email.

Automatic Reconciliation, Not Manual Matching

The invoicing side is only half the benefit. The other half happens after the client pays, and it is the part that usually costs a bookkeeper time at month end.

1

The payment settles in seconds

Because it moves account-to-account, the money reaches your bank typically within seconds of the client approving it, rather than waiting on a card payout or a manual bank transfer to clear.

2

The invoice updates itself in Xero

When a client pays through their SSV SmartPay link, the corresponding Xero invoice is automatically marked as paid and reconciled, rather than sitting as outstanding until someone matches it by hand.

3

Your books stay current without extra admin

No spreadsheet cross-checking, no “did this payment come in yet?” messages. The invoice list in Xero reflects reality as it happens.

Set up once, in under five minutes. Connecting Xero and choosing your link and QR preferences is a one-time step. Every invoice you raise afterwards carries the same instant, self-reconciling payment option automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SSV SmartPay Xero integration work?

Connect your Xero account to SSV SmartPay from the Integrations page in a few minutes. Once connected, every new Xero invoice automatically triggers a separate SSV SmartPay email containing a payment link and QR code, so your customer can pay directly from their banking app, instead of manually entering card or bank transfer details.

Does the customer need an SSV SmartPay account to pay?

No. The customer receives an email with a payment link and a QR code to scan. They tap the link or scan the code, choose their bank, and approve the payment in their own banking app. There is nothing for them to sign up for or download.

Can I choose how the payment link is sent to customers?

Yes. In the SSV SmartPay Xero integration settings, you can turn on “Attach QR on invoice” to include a scannable QR code in the payment email sent for new invoices, and separately turn on “Enable payment link SMS” if you would also like the payment link texted to the customer contact on file. SMS delivery is optional and off by default.

How long does it take to connect Xero to SSV SmartPay?

A few minutes. You authorise SSV SmartPay from within Xero, confirming access to your invoices, contacts, and payments, and the connection is active immediately, ready to apply to your next invoice.
